Microsoft has confirmed that a Windows 11 update coming later this year will give users the option to remap the dedicated CoPilot key to the right Ctrl key or context menu key on supported devices. This change addresses workflow issues that arose when Microsoft introduced dedicated CoPilot keys on new PCs in 2024 in place of traditional keys.
In a support document, Microsoft acknowledged the problem, saying that “Customers who rely on the right Ctrl key or the context menu key for keyboard shortcuts or assistive technologies like screen readers faced challenges in their workflow when using these tools.”
How Windows 11’s new CoPilot key remapping will work
Once the update is released, users will be able to remap CoPilot keys via Settings, Bluetooth & Devices, Keyboard. The dropdown menu will allow users to choose between Copilot, Right Ctrl, Context Menu, or other supported options.
This new feature will work on all Windows 11 PCs equipped with a CoPilot key, regardless of manufacturer. Some PC manufacturers already offer remapping options through their own software, but the upcoming change introduces native, OEM-independent controls directly within Windows.
The existing Co-Pilot key option and why the new update matters for accessibility
Microsoft previously introduced the option to remap the CoPilot key to open Windows Search or any other app installed on the system. However, currently, no third-party apps natively support launching via Copilot key, which limits the utility of that feature for users who prefer not to launch Copilot directly.
Screen readers and other assistive technologies on Windows often use the right Ctrl key for navigation and commands. Replacing that key with a dedicated CoPilot key disrupted workflow for users dependent on these devices. The upcoming update restores compatibility and also allows users to use CoPilot keys if they wish.
Microsoft is making several changes to Windows 11 in response to user feedback. Recent updates include restoring a movable taskbar, adding expanded pause controls for Windows Update, removing the CoPilot branding from Notepad, and canceling plans to integrate CoPilot into Windows 11 Settings and File Explorer.
The company hasn’t announced a specific release date for the CoPilot key remapping update, only confirming that it will be arriving later this year.
