As of September 15, 2025, Spotify is upgrading its free tier to allow users on mobile to search, select, and play specific tracks on-demand, breaking the long-standing shuffle-only restriction. Users can now listen to specific songs, play shared tracks instantly, and have the previous 6-skips-per-hour limit removed, although ads and limited daily on-demand play minutes still apply.

Believe it or not, this basic feature was behind a paywall. You might know that Spotify allows users to access it for free, but they have to listen to ads. plain and simple. Don’t like ads? Pay for Spotify Premium, which offers some nice benefits. You get access to ad-free music, downloads, songs and recent lossless streaming, mixes and more.
So, anyway, I wanted to provide some context about how Spotify free discovery worked before this change. When you searched for a specific track or artist and clicked on the result, it would not play the actual track. Instead, it will play something else randomly from the artist, it will shuffle the music. This was basically Spotify’s way of getting people to subscribe to Premium. Now, when you search for a track on Spotify, you can play it for free. This experience is being called “Discover and Play.” When you click play on a Spotify track, it’s “pick and play.” Users can also share tracks with their friends, and as you guessed it, it’s “Share and Play”. The names are a bit silly, but they’re a welcome improvement.
Messages and personalized playlists Daylist (not kidding, that’s what it’s called) are available to free users. Shares and plays may actually be a direct result of messages being introduced, so users can easily share playlists, tracks via DM.
Daily Spotify Limits and Restrictions
