Security researcher Andy Nguyen shares a method of running Linux on some PlayStation 5 units with setup Instructions are available on GitHub.
This is an earlier demo where Nguyen showed off Ubuntu running on a console while getting Grand Theft Auto V 60 frames per second With ray tracing turned on and Spider-Man running at 1440p 60fps. The amendment is temporary. Rebooting the console destroys the Linux environment, so users have to reload it every time they turn on the system.
PS5 Linux Compatibility Requirements
This exploit is only effective on disc-based PS5 models running firmware versions 3.xx and 4.xx. This firmware does not support systems updated to 5.xx. Nguyen mentions that support for firmware versions 1.xx and 2.xx may be added in the future, but it is not currently a priority.
What works and what doesn’t in PS5 Linux setup
The implementation includes adjusted VRAM allocation and functional fan control for stable operation. Display output supported 1080p, 1440p, and 4KRefresh rates are currently capped at 60Hz. Nguyen says 120Hz support may be added in the future.
A workaround requires network connectivity after boot. Users may need to turn the WLAN adapter off and on to restore Internet access after startup. These limitations reflect the initial state of driver support for hardware that was not originally designed to run Linux.
Nguyen is exploring a shutdown option that will put the console in rest mode instead of shutting down completely, allowing Linux to be relaunched without repeating the full setup process.
Project scope and limitations
Nguyen says there’s no risk of bricking the console, which lowers the barrier for users willing to try this method. The project focuses exclusively on running Linux and does not open the door to extensive homebrew software or game backup capabilities seen in earlier PlayStation hacking scenes.
Tools and instructions are available on GitHub. The project is said to be best suited for users who are already comfortable working in a Linux environment.
